The results are in for the 2010 UK Songwriting Contest.
And…
Well, three of my compositions got a mention:
- Semi-Finalist – RIEVAULX
- Commended – PRODRIVE
- Commended – BRODSWORTH
Not too bad, I guess.
Did any composers out in cyberspace enter? If so, how did you get on?

One of my compositions (‘The Billiard Room’) is being performed in Montreal today as part of the 60×60 Order of Magnitude Mix – a dance-video-music show in a high profile event (Congress 2010).
Here’s the blurb…
Vox Novus is proud to present ten hours of music, dance, and video,
featuring one-minute works by 600 composers, the most ever to be programmed in a single
show. The show will be part of Congress 2010, the largest annual interdisciplinary gathering in
North America, expecting approximately 10,000 visitors this year.
Emitted from loudspeakers at the four corners of the gallery, the pieces will be sequenced
continually without pause for the entire duration of the show, with a new piece beginning every
minute on the minute. A large analog clock mounted on a wall will allow the audience to follow
each piece’s progress.
Dancers will improvise at the center of the gallery on each individual piece, and live video will be
projected on two opposing walls. The audience will walk freely in and out of the gallery, and
around the dance area, being surrounded by multisensory stimuli from all directions.
Since 2003, 60×60 has been presented in over 200 concerts, shows, and multimedia
installations worldwide with the mission to support and highlight the contemporary art
community by bringing together a large number of artists of multiple disciplines, styles, media
and career stages into collaborative art making in a format that is extremely accessible to the
wide public.
This show is organized by Vox Novus in collaboration with the Canadian Electroacoustic
Community (CEC) and the FoFA Gallery.
Just wish I could be there to hear it!

After two months of negotiations, a distribution agreement has been signed covering North America with LA based cvdistributes.
The Spell will now be available in North America through some very well known outlets.
Nearer home, The Spell is being shown at the Parkway Cinema in Cleethorpes next Thursday (27th May – see: http://cleethorpes.parkwaycinemas.co.uk) and this will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Owen Carey Jones and producer Neil Harrison.
This event has been organised by Meniscus Films who run an annual film festival in Humberside and Owen Carey Jones did a radio interview yesterday for BBC Radio Humberside promoting the event which you can listen to by going here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/humberside/programmes/schedules – look for Lara King’s Morning Show for the 19th May and it’s about 2 hour 19 minutes into the show.

This is the month that the UK Songwriting Contest gets judged and ‘yours truly’ has several songs and instrumental tracks entered.
The judging panel is very high-powered this year: world renowned producers such as Simon Ellis (visit Simon’s website)and Richard Niles (visit Richard’s website).
Other people carefully watching the contest include The Stage’s Scott Matthewman and Director of TV at Universal Music UK Lesley Douglas among others.
I’ve won a few runner-up prizes in this contest before, but it’s been a few years now since I entered.
If I win, I’ll let you know. If I don’t, I’ll simply go all mysteriously quiet for a few days
