Classical Soundtrack Cliches

Is it a bad thing to expose the masses to Classical music via film?

As a composer and music teacher I encourage people to listen carefully to soundtrack music.  It so often simply washes over some people.  Take it away, and the film collapses!

Can Classical music (in its widest sense) be over used?  To the point of cliche?

You know the kind of thing: “The Ride of the Valkyries” in “Apocalypse Now”!

TV commercials constantly bombard us with half-remembered tunes that we remember from music lessons at school: “Carnival of the Animals” and “Danse Macabre”, for example.

Is this a good thing?

I’ve just read a very interesting article by David Ng on this exact subject.  Makes for an interesting debate, methinks!
