Jacob Marshal asked:

What do we expect from movies? No doubt, entertainment is the first thing that we would expect from movies. What else? After long hectic schedules of daily work, we would often prefer to go for an amazing movie that can give us lot of excitement and good fun, than those tragic ones. Sport movies are the kind of movies which can give people utmost joy and pleasure.

The sport movies are built upon sports settings like football field or baseball stadium, arena, or the Olympics etc. Often you would find a competitive event or various athletic events being the central point upon which the whole story of the movie is built. Mostly the protagonist of the story is a boxer, footballer or a racer or any other sports person according to the demands of the story. Sports movies does not necessarily be fictional, they can be non-fictional also or a combination of both. However, they would surely belong to one or the other subcategories like biopics, dramas, comedies, documentaries, fantasies, film noir and melodramas.

Whatever may be their category, sport films are widely popular among the masses. The sound tracks of the sport movies are often exciting. The narrative and commentaries in the sport movies are also marvelous. Excellent sound track, good choreography and real like settings make the sport movies unique. Many sport movies have won the hearts of the audience and remained evergreen till today. Some of the most popular sport movies include Olympia (1938), Bull Durham (1988), Raging Bull (1980) , Hoop Dreams (1994), Hoosiers (1986) , Remember the Titans (2000) , Million Dollar Legs (1932) , Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (2005) and Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) etc.

Many sport movies are also based on real stories. Some of the renowned sports movies which are based on real life stories include The Great White Hope, Gentleman Jim , The Cinderella Man etc. The Pride of the Yankees (1942) is also a famous sport movie based on Lou Gehrig the reputed baseball player of the New York Yankees. Another film Ali starred by Will Smith is based on the life of boxing champion Muhammad Ali. Somebody Up There Likes Me released in 1956 is also an excellent film highlighting the life of middleweight champion Rocky Graziano.

Sport movies are always acclaimed. Till now, movies on various sports, including football, cheer leading, wrestling, chess, boxing etc have been made. But, the most popular sport themes in the Hollywood seem to be baseball, basketball, American football, soccer and boxing. However other sport themes like horse racing, golf and wrestling are also greatly appreciated by the audience.

MLM Mockumentary — Believe the Movie — Released on DVD

Vikram Singh Chadha asked:

mentary “Believe the Movie” has been released on DVD. The movie pokes fun at the multi-level-marketing (MLM) industry.

Believe the Movie – MLM Mockumentary

Believe is just a funny, funny movie. All we ask is that you tell five friends about the movie and then have them tell five of their friends

Believe is a comedy, satire, mockumentary movie about network marketing. Network-marketing, or multi-level-marketing, is parodied in the film. It follows the adventures of distributors from a make believe MLM business like those found in businesses like: Amway, NuSkin, Xango, Noni, Usana, Herbalife, Pre-Paid Legal, ACN, Avon, and Mary Kay.

Writer and director Loki Mulholland is a former Amway distributor, who tried to make money for 4 years. “I was one of those gung-ho distributors who listened to the tapes and went to the conventions. I did it all … except make money. Little did I know that you have better odds winning in Vegas than you do succeeding in multi-level-marketing,” said Mulholland.

Not only does the film include Mulholland’s experiences, but shows many different people and their experiences with MLM. “It’s a light-hearted comedy about the business in a way that MLMers can get a good laugh as well as those who oppose MLMs. But there’s a lot of truth to the movie as well,” he notes.

Believe is set in the anywhere town of Springfield and follows the life of Adam Pendon (played by Larry Bagby, Walk the Line), a laid off steel mill worker who must find a new way to provide for his family. He got introduced to Believe Industries, a multi-level marketing company, by an overzealous recruiter, Mark Fuller (played by Lincoln Hoppe, Saints and Soldiers). The movie follows the “unique” lifestyles of several different “Believers” (Believers are distributors who work for Believe Industries).

“The main reason for the film, is to entertain people, to have fun and make a light-hearted comedy. I guess you can also consider it a form of therapy for MLMers too,” says Mulholland.

Believe appeared in numerous film festivals around the country and won three Audience Choice Awards.

A songwriter first, (four of his songs are on the movie soundtrack) Mulholland eventually wrote a song titled, Believe. The catchy hook and inspirational lyrics put the goal in Mulholland’s mind to market this song to a multi-level marketing company. Although that didn’t happen, Mulholland’s original song is sung in the movie by Graham Russell of Air Supply.

Although some network marketing companies weren’t excited about Believe (the filmmakers were threatened with a lawsuit) most people recognize the lighter side of the movie.

“We’ve shown this film to many people who have been deeply involved in various network marketing companies and without fail they say how accurate, in fact frighteningly so, we are in our treatment of the characters and events. But at the same time they also make note of how funny the movie truly is,” says Micah Merrill, producer.

The DVD includes interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and even an interview with an industry insider who discusses what’s wrong with the industry and right about Believe.

“Believe is just a funny, funny movie. All we ask is that you tell five friends about the movie and then have them tell five of their friends,” jokes Mulholland.

Effective Use of Music in Movies

December 2nd, 2008

Sarika Kabra asked:

One of the main contributing factors to a movie’s success is its soundtrack. Music is an essential element in most plays and dramas. Shakespeare made efficient use of music in his famous plays. Movie makers realize that a lot of the movie’s business at the box office depends upon the music recording. There are many ways to incorporate songs in a movie. Musicals are one genre which is exclusively based on songs and lyrics. However, even if it is an action movie, filmmakers find ways to include some soundtracks into it.

In fact, Bollywood films are renowned for the excessive song and dance sequences they have. Hollywood movies too use orchestral or synthesizer score or even a new hit song to add to the interest element. Sometimes a movie’s popularity is increased by its musical score. Celine Dion’s “My heart will go on” for Titanic stayed on in public memory long after the movie left the cinema halls. The soundtrack of Love Story is one of the most enduring ever, and who doesn’t download music from Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. Many a times, blockbusters become classics because of their excellent scores. Hence, composers and song writers are in great demand in Hollywood.

There are different types of motion picture music. One is the underscore category like the score for Steven Spielberg’s E.T. Another is the category of original recording like “Hungry Heart” for the movie Perfect Storm. Finally there is the song that is written especially for a movie like “Over the rainbow” for the hugely popular Wizard of Oz. Each of these types is used frequently in movies and requires different recordings, contracts and royalties.

Songs are used in movies to show all kinds of emotions. A romantic setting is enhanced by an appropriate love song. Similarly music has been used to make people laugh and cry. In fact the story itself can be narrated through cleverly inserted songs. Moreover, with a great background score, emotions and dialogs acquire more significance. If a producer wants to use an existing soundtrack for his movie, he can do so by negotiating with the music producer. Often, a pre-existing, hit song can help create the mood required in the movie. The soundtracks of many movies come out and go on to become huge hits in their own right. These days with digital music recording, adding new songs to movies is becoming easier.

My Fair Lady was a complete musical whose main claim to fame was the witty use of lyrics to show every mood. Similarly, Chicago and Moulin Rouge used songs and extravagant dances to create the required atmosphere. Even if the movie does not use songs every other minute, it will show action with a background score playing regularly. Who can forget the scenes of Psycho with the spine tingling music in the background? The audio mastering was such here that the score heightens the audience’s fear and any time one hears the music he quickly associates it with Psycho. Such is the power of appropriate music in cinema!
